Past and Furious: Get dressed down Mercedes for Rs 5 lakh

NEW DELHI: For thousands of Indian auto enthusiasts, this is the closest thing to petrol-head heaven. Car-modification experts are working overtime to cut costs. And by the look of things they have it all figured out. No, you still don’t get a gull-winged coupe for the price of a Maruti 800. But double that amount and you might be able to snap up a souped-up BMW or Mercedes.

For Indian automobile buffs, modification has always been expensive. But not anymore. Now for anything between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 6 lakh, modification gurus are only too happy to build you a spanking new custom-made hot rod - cost of car included. And less money doesn’t necessarily mean less of a car. A beaming Beamer or a snotty Merc - that’s what you get.

Earlier, it was almost impossible to get a customised Merc or Beamer at this price. But now due to the slowdown in business, car studios have found out a way to work around the problem. And customers are happy too. Who doesn’t want to be seen in a Merc or a Beamer? And if it comes at a fraction of the cost of a new vehicle, customers feel that they have hit the jackpot.

“First, let us get new cars out of the way,” says Arush Vohra owner of Autopsyche, a Delhi-based car studio. By new cars, he means favourites such as the Honda Accord, Skoda RS and the ever-popular Honda Civic. “New cars cost money. Instead, we spend around Rs 2.5 lakh and pick up old BMWs and Mercedes from the used-car market,” he reveals. “These cars don’t require any major overhauling since their build quality is excellent, and mechanically they are well-suited to Indian conditions.” According to Vohra, Autopsyche has modified a good number of BMWs and Mercs till now.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class “aura of quality”

There is an "aura of quality and solidarity" that makes the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe special, particularly on the inside, a review has stated.

Writing for the Independent, John Simister highlighted that for a vehicle so sleek, offering a coefficient of aerodynamic drag of just 0.24, passengers can benefit from lots of space in the back of the coupe.

Meanwhile, they should definitely feel safe as the car is fitted with the typical Mercedes-Benz "onslaught of electronic safety and convenience cleverness".

Furthermore, when looking at the exterior, Mr Simister chose to highlight comments made by Mercedes-Benz Design Director Karl-Heinz Bauer at a recent meeting.

In response to a question asking if today’s cars have become a little "overstyled and overwrought", Mr Bauer responded: "That’s what people want.

"They want something showy that marks their cars out as new and we have new models more often than ever before."

Mr Simister concludes by saying that a motorist will especially be getting a "truly delightful car" if they wait until September for the release of the Mercedes-Benz E250.

The first Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe was recently collected by Siegfried Moller from the production plant in Bremen, Germany.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class driving pleasure

"Outstanding agility and driving pleasure" awaits drivers who purchase a vehicle from the 2009 Mercedes-Benz S-Class range, it has been revealed. Reason for benefits is new and improved systems added to the vehicles.
These include the Direct-Steer system, which improves a driver’s steering precision. Reduce the number of turns needed of a steering wheel by 25 per cent, which could be especially beneficial for a motorist driving in inner-city areas.

Meanwhile, the steering is also supported through a new addition to
the 2009 S-Class – the Torque Vectoring Brake.

This is a one-sided braking intervention that affects the inside rear wheel when a motorist is taking a corner, enabling a vehicle to maintain full control through a corner without the risk of a loss of handling dynamics.

Other technical highlights of the vehicle range that come as standard include adaptive front airbags that deploy in two stages and NECK-PRO head restraints.

Mercedes-New S : 350

DESIGN, ENGINEERING and INTERIORS

The new S is certainly radical in the looks department and its styling splits opinion right down the middle. Longer and larger than the outgoing car, the new S has an all-new profile that blends sporty, large wheel arches and a low nose with a Maybach limo-like steeply raked rear windscreen and boot section. At the front, a very modern fender line blends wheel arch and headlight, while the bonnet line sweeps up from the windscreen over the roof and down the rear. The CAs silhouette looks elegant when cruising past, imparting an air of effortless motion.

Every inch of the S-350 interiors is covered in the finest quality materials. The grain of the wood, quality of the thick but supple leather, the well-damped manner in which the metal capped buttons work and the micron perfect fit all prove that Mercedes has met its objective of improving interior quality.

This car is a dedicated four-seater, where all seats can be adjusted for various parameters. Yes, this may leave precious little space for a fifth passenger, but only superlative adjectives can be used to describe the seats. Each a size larger than necessary for that extra bit of comfort, they support you in areas other seats dont reach upper and lower thigh, the edges of your shoulder blades, and the entire length of your back. Youre seated at the perfect height behind, and like the earlier S, the seats can either have cool air flowing through them or be heated, adding considerably to overall comfort.

What we didnt particularly care for was the design of the dash. Some elements of the design echo the solidly-built Mercs of yesteryear, with chunky detailing and bold surfaces. Merc has also included a number of features that first featured on the BMW 7-series Mercs version of i-Drive, called Comand, a steering column-mounted automatic gear stalk or selector and a push-button parking brake. The Comand system is easier to use than BMWs i-Drive, but like Audis MMI system, the dash still has plenty of buttons on it. There is also a Comand dial for rear seat passengers, but this only offers control for the rear-mounted screens and a DVD player part of the package.

The car has an improved version of the Airmatic suspension found in the earlier version, and we dont hesitate to call this the best air suspension system around better than on any of its competitors. As with any of these systems, it has the ability to raise the ride height of the car if road conditions demand it, making the S relatively stress-free to drive on our roads.

PERFORMANCE, FUEL ECONOMY and HANDLING

Under the hood is a new motor that uses a four-valve-per-cylinder head, as against the earlier models three. This, along with other new features, means power is up 11 percent. However, despite the cars 272 bhp and 35kgm of torque, it still lacks the S500s sheer waftabillity, where even a slight dab on the accelerator sends the car darting forward effortlessly. And again, we love the extra seventh gear ratio, but this gearbox, like other Merc seven-speeders, sometimes seems to flounder, deciding between gears when you call for instant thrust.

However, what increased our rather amorous feelings for the S-class even further was the manner in which this car drove. It has no right to feel light, agile and attack corners this way. But at almost two tons, it still does. There are three modes you can drive this car in Comfort, Sport and Manual the last allows you to shift gears via buttons behind the steering wheel. Select Sport and the car recognises you want to drive with more urgency, and it tweaks the Airmatic suspension and adaptive dampers, and even lowers the cars ride height by 20mm after 120kph. Pressing on in the massive S-class is not intimidating at all. In fact, the car tightens up its act and displays superb body control and poise around corners. Its ever willing to turn into corners, grip is very strong and the brakes on this new S-class have much more feel.

The ludicrous bit, for a car its weight and engine power, is it managed all of 6.1kpl in the city and 9.1kpl on the highway! We often explain that if a car is heavier, more fuel is consumed, but this is all about Mercedes-Benz bending the rules of physics.
